What Is a US Insert Movie Poster? A Collector's Guide
Share
For collectors accustomed to the familiar US One Sheet, the US Insert is a very different proposition. Long, narrow and considerably smaller, Inserts were produced for display in American cinemas and are now one of the most distinctive vintage US movie poster formats.
Their unusual proportions, manageable size and often striking artwork make them particularly appealing to collectors – especially for classic films where a full-size One Sheet may be difficult or expensive to acquire.
What is a US Insert movie poster?
A US Insert is an original American theatrical movie poster measuring approximately 14 × 36 inches (36 × 91 cm).
The format was part of the wider range of advertising material supplied to American cinemas. Inserts could be displayed in locations where larger posters weren't practical, complementing formats such as One Sheets, Half Sheets, Lobby Cards and Window Cards.
With a width of only 14 inches and a height of 36 inches, the Insert has a distinctive tall, narrow appearance that makes it immediately recognisable.
When were US Inserts used?
Inserts have a long history in American cinema advertising and can be found for films dating back to the early decades of the 20th century.
They are particularly associated with the classic Hollywood era and the decades that followed, with surviving examples covering everything from film noir, westerns and musicals to horror, science fiction and major Hollywood productions.
Like several traditional US cinema poster formats, Inserts eventually fell out of regular use as theatrical advertising practices changed. This means they are very much a vintage format rather than something normally produced for modern cinema releases.
Artwork and design
One of the attractions of collecting Inserts is that their artwork isn't necessarily identical to the corresponding One Sheet.
The unusual 14 × 36 inch proportions required designers to adapt a film's campaign artwork to a much narrower space. Some Inserts feature painted artwork, while others combine portraits, photographic imagery, typography and scenes from the film.
For certain titles, collectors particularly favour the Insert because its composition is as attractive as – or sometimes quite different from – the better-known One Sheet.
This gives collectors another version of a favourite film's original theatrical advertising to discover.
Why collect US Insert posters?
There are several reasons why Inserts have remained popular with movie poster collectors.
Their 14 × 36 inch size makes them considerably easier to frame and display than a US One Sheet, while still providing a substantial piece of original theatrical artwork.
They can also provide an alternative route into collecting desirable films. For some titles, the corresponding One Sheet may command a significant premium, while an Insert can offer original period artwork from the same theatrical campaign at a different price point.
That doesn't mean Inserts are always inexpensive. Rare films, desirable artwork, important stars and sought-after genres can make individual examples extremely collectable in their own right.
Their unusual proportions also make them particularly effective when displayed alongside other poster formats.
Rolled, folded and condition
One of the first things collectors notice about vintage US Inserts is that surviving examples can show very different patterns of wear.
As with other original theatrical posters, these were produced as working advertising material rather than as collectors' items. Depending on how an individual poster was distributed, stored and displayed, it may have folds, pin holes, edge wear, surface marks or other signs of cinema use.
Condition should therefore be considered in the context of the poster's age and rarity.
Original folds or minor signs of use don't necessarily detract from the appeal of an Insert, but significant paper loss, trimming, staining or restoration should always be clearly identified.
Original release or re-release?
As with US One Sheets, not every Insert was produced for a film's first theatrical release.
Popular films were frequently returned to cinemas, and new advertising material could be created for those later screenings. A re-release Insert is still a genuine original theatrical movie poster, but it belongs to a later cinema campaign rather than the film's initial release.
The artwork, studio information, distributor details and other markings can all help establish which release a particular poster was produced for.
Understanding this distinction is particularly important when comparing prices or looking for an original first-release poster.
What should collectors look for?
Authenticity should always come first.
An original US Insert was produced for theatrical advertising and shouldn't be confused with later commercial prints or reproductions made for the home-decoration market.
Check the poster's dimensions, printing and release information, and consider whether these are consistent with the film and period. For valuable examples, provenance and comparison with known originals can also be useful.
Artwork is another important consideration. Some collectors specifically seek Inserts because they prefer the design to other formats, while others collect several different pieces from the same film's advertising campaign.
Ultimately, the best Insert is one that combines a film or piece of artwork you enjoy with authenticity, condition and a price you're comfortable with.
Framing and caring for a US Insert
The narrow dimensions of an Insert make it one of the easier original American movie poster formats to display.
As with any vintage paper collectible, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, damp and significant changes in temperature.
When framing, consider UV-protective glazing, acid-free materials and reversible mounting methods. Valuable posters should not be permanently glued or dry-mounted simply to make them lie flat.
A specialist framer familiar with vintage paper can usually accommodate original folds and minor imperfections without permanently altering the poster.
A distinctive piece of American cinema history
The US Insert combines many of the things that make vintage movie poster collecting interesting: original theatrical use, period artwork, an unusual format and decades of cinema history.
At 14 × 36 inches, it is large enough for the artwork to make an impact but compact enough to display relatively easily.
Whether you're looking for an alternative to a One Sheet, collecting different formats for a favourite film or simply attracted to their distinctive proportions, original US Inserts offer a fascinating area of movie poster collecting.
Most importantly, an original Insert isn't simply a decorative print. It is a genuine piece of advertising created for the American theatrical market and a surviving part of the film's cinema history.
