Directed by Malcolm Mowbray and written by Alan Bennett and Mowbray, A Private Function is a 1984 British comedy starring Michael Palin, Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Richard Griffiths, Tony Haygarth, Bill Paterson, Liz Smith and Alison Steadman.

Set in post-war Yorkshire during the period of food rationing, the film follows chiropodist Gilbert Chilvers, played by Michael Palin, and his socially ambitious wife Joyce, played by Maggie Smith. Their lives become considerably more complicated when they become involved with an illegally raised pig intended for a private banquet celebrating the royal wedding.

Produced by HandMade Films, A Private Function became an acclaimed British comedy and won three BAFTA Film Awards, with Maggie Smith winning Best Actress, Denholm Elliott Best Supporting Actor and Liz Smith Best Supporting Actress.
