Directed by Sidney Lumet, Dog Day Afternoon is a critically acclaimed 1975 American crime drama starring Al Pacino, John Cazale and Charles Durning.
Inspired by a real bank robbery that took place in Brooklyn in August 1972, the film follows Sonny Wortzik, played by Pacino, whose attempted bank robbery rapidly spirals into a chaotic hostage situation.
What was intended to be a quick robbery becomes a tense public spectacle, attracting police, television crews and large crowds of onlookers as the situation unfolds over the course of a sweltering summer afternoon.
John Cazale delivers a memorable performance as Sonny's nervous accomplice Sal Naturile, while Charles Durning plays police detective Eugene Moretti, who attempts to negotiate a peaceful resolution.
The supporting cast includes James Broderick, Chris Sarandon and Penelope Allen.
Combining crime thriller tension with social commentary, dark humour and powerful performances, Dog Day Afternoon remains one of the defining American films of the 1970s.
The film received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sidney Lumet and Best Actor for Al Pacino, winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
This original US theatrical poster features the distinctive minimalist design, with three images of Al Pacino arranged vertically against a pale background and framed by bold red and black graphic elements.
The poster incorporates the film's memorable promotional tagline, describing the extraordinary bank robbery that became a national media spectacle.
