Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, Quest for Fire is a prehistoric adventure based on the novel by J. H. Rosny Sr., starring Everett McGill, Rae Dawn Chong, Ron Perlman, Nicholas Kadi and Gary Schwartz.

Set in prehistoric Europe, the film follows three members of a Stone Age tribe who set out on a dangerous journey to find a new source of fire after their own is extinguished. Their quest brings them into contact with other tribes and gradually exposes them to new forms of communication, technology and human behaviour.

Rather than using conventional dialogue, the production employed a specially created prehistoric language devised by author Anthony Burgess, while zoologist and behavioural expert Desmond Morris developed the characters' gestures and body language.

Originally released as La Guerre du feu, the film won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and received further international recognition for its ambitious depiction of prehistoric life.
