Directed by Zhang Yimou, Raise the Red Lantern (1991) is an acclaimed Chinese period drama starring Gong Li. Set in 1920s China, the film follows a young woman who becomes the fourth wife of a wealthy man and finds herself drawn into the rivalries and traditions governing his household.

Adapted from Su Tong's novella Wives and Concubines, the film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and won the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language. It also won the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival.
