Directed by David Lynch, The Elephant Man is the acclaimed 1980 biographical drama starring John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller and Freddie Jones.

John Hurt stars as John Merrick, a severely disfigured man living in Victorian London who is rescued from a sideshow by surgeon Frederick Treves, played by Anthony Hopkins. As Treves begins to understand Merrick's intelligence and humanity, he introduces him to Victorian society while attempting to protect him from continued exploitation.

Produced by Mel Brooks through Brooksfilms, The Elephant Man received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for David Lynch and Best Actor for John Hurt.

Shot in atmospheric black and white by cinematographer Freddie Francis, the film has become one of David Lynch's most celebrated works and remains one of John Hurt's defining performances.
