Directed by Alan Bridges and adapted by Hugh Whitemore from Rebecca West's 1918 novel, The Return of the Soldier is a British First World War drama starring Alan Bates, Julie Christie, Glenda Jackson, Ann-Margret and Ian Holm.

Alan Bates stars as Captain Chris Baldry, who returns from the First World War suffering from shell shock and amnesia. Unable to remember his wife Kitty, played by Julie Christie, he instead recalls his former relationship with Margaret Grey, played by Glenda Jackson.

Ann-Margret co-stars as Chris's cousin Jenny, while Ian Holm plays the doctor called upon to help restore his memory.

A character-driven exploration of memory, class, love and the psychological effects of war, The Return of the Soldier was selected for competition at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival.

This original British Quad was designed by FEREF and printed in England by W.E. Berry Ltd., Bradford.
