Directed by Phil Agland and adapted from the novel by Thomas Hardy, The Woodlanders is a 1997 British period romantic drama starring Emily Woof, Rufus Sewell, Cal MacAninch, Tony Haygarth, Jodhi May and Polly Walker.

Set in rural England during the late 19th century, the story follows Grace Melbury, played by Emily Woof, who returns home after completing her education. Although reunited with her childhood sweetheart Giles Winterborne, played by Rufus Sewell, her father has greater ambitions for her future.

Grace instead marries the socially superior Dr Fitzpiers, played by Cal MacAninch, but soon discovers that her feelings for Giles have not disappeared.

Based on Thomas Hardy's 1887 novel, The Woodlanders combines period drama and romance against the rural landscape of Hardy's Wessex.
