Directed by Agnieszka Holland, Washington Square is a 1997 period romantic drama starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Albert Finney, Ben Chaplin, Maggie Smith and Judith Ivey.

Adapted from the novel by Henry James, the film stars Jennifer Jason Leigh as Catherine Sloper, a shy young heiress living with her wealthy father, Dr Austin Sloper, played by Albert Finney, in 19th-century New York.

Catherine is courted by the charming but penniless Morris Townsend, played by Ben Chaplin. Her father becomes convinced that Morris is interested only in her inheritance, placing Catherine between her feelings for Morris and her father's determination to prevent their marriage.

Maggie Smith co-stars as Catherine's well-meaning aunt Lavinia, while Jennifer Garner appears in an early film role as Marian Almond.

Washington Square was released theatrically in the UK in 1998 and is an adaptation of Henry James' 1880 novel, previously adapted for the screen as The Heiress.
